Kandy to Ella is a hill-country rail journey rather than a simple city transfer. Services follow Sri Lanka’s Main Line through the central highlands, and the exact train, journey time and reservable classes can vary by date. Check the official timetable first, then use the reservation portal to see which reserved seats are actually offered for your day.
If your itinerary includes Nuwara Eliya or Haputale, you do not have to ride the full Kandy–Ella segment. Nanu Oya is the railway station used for Nuwara Eliya, while Haputale can be a natural intermediate stop.
BOOKING
Book in the official system — up to 30 days ahead
Sri Lanka Railways says online seat reservations can be made up to 30 days before travel and, if seats are still available, until 2 hours before departure. You need an account, passport or ID details for every passenger, and you can reserve up to five seats in one booking. Seats are allocated automatically.

After Cyclone “Ditwa”, the hill-country line was restored in stages. The latest public Sri Lanka Railways restoration notice, dated 18 June 2026, confirms that Badulla–Nanu Oya services resumed. Separately, the official reservation FAQ currently lists Kandy–Ella among routes available for seat reservation. That is a useful sign, but it is not a guarantee that every through service runs normally on every date. Check the official timetable and the reservation result for your exact travel day.

Useful distinction: “No online booking” is a reservation-system result, not automatically a service-status notice.

What to do if reserved seats are unavailable
Do not treat “no seats” as the end of the trip. Use this order:
- If you are booking for several people, search for fewer passengers — the official FAQ specifically suggests this when seats are unavailable.
- Check the official timetable to confirm that a train is actually scheduled on your date.
- Try another sensible origin or destination station only if it fits your itinerary — for example Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) or Haputale.
- Ask at an mTicketing-enabled railway station. The official FAQ points travellers there when online seats are unavailable.
- Treat unreserved travel as a separate, less predictable option and keep a road-transfer backup if this train is essential to your itinerary.

Booking Ella to Kandy works through the same official Sri Lanka Railways reservation system: select Ella as your departure station and Kandy as your destination, then search your exact date. Availability can differ by direction and train, so do not assume that a sold-out Kandy → Ella search means the reverse journey is also unavailable.
