There is no single “best month” for all of Sri Lanka. The two monsoons affect different parts of the island at different times.
SHORT ANSWER
There is no single “best month” for all of Sri Lanka. The two monsoons affect different parts of the island at different times.
THE KEY IDEA
Choose the coast for your month
Sri Lanka Tourism describes four climate seasons and two monsoon periods. The southwest monsoon mainly affects the southwest coast and hills from May to September, while the northeast monsoon is December to February.
SOUTH & WEST
November to March is the classic beach window
Sri Lanka Tourism says northeast winds make the southwestern coast sunnier and the sea calmer from roughly November to March.
EAST COAST
The east can be the better beach choice in the European summer
During the southwest monsoon, the dry-zone and east-coast destinations such as Trincomalee and Arugam Bay can offer better conditions than the southwest.
CHECK THE FORECAST
Monsoon does not mean rain every minute
Weather varies locally and by year. Use the Department of Meteorology for current forecasts and warnings close to your trip.
